geology

(the intricate glass jars made during this process are available for sale in the boutique.)

water has shaped the surface of earth since its arrival 4.4 billion years ago. think of a river sculpting a valley, an ocean shaping a shoreline and rain drops forming caves. deep time geological processes were replicated in a gallery space.

~ erosion
~ dissolving
~ transportation of minerals
~ evaporation
~ precipitation
~ recrystallisation

water continuously dripped onto a ball of selenite, a mineral. over time the mineral dissolved. the water with the dissolved mineral was captured in glass jars. the jars were placed on the floor and the water slowly evaporated leaving the mineral behind. the glass jars’ sides and bottom are coated with details of the recrystallised selenite.

when the space is quiet the sound of dripping can be heard. a gentle natural sound.

geology was shown in the exhibition ebb and flow, which has been written about here, here, here and here.
