spiral
white cylinders hanging in a spiral formation.
simultaneously expanding and contracting.
simultaneously becoming bigger and smaller.
simultaneously going up and going down.
does this structure remind you of vertebrae?

this delicate piece was made during our time at Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. the room that spiral was built in was filled with the chaos of other art students. we set up a perimeter of string as a fence to keep dirty footsteps and accidental bumps away. as with many of the structures we have made, spiral was carefully balanced and always nearly falling.
the line traces the golden spiral, which is one helix found in nature and mathematics.
like many of the structures we have made, this art object was destroyed. spiral was destroyed during a performance. after reading a book with empty pages, the word “ephemeral” was said.
ephemeral : lasting for a very short time
